30 August 2006
This programme featured two parts: an interview with Steve and Cheryl O'Connor from Pink Champagne and tribute to the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Part One
"The singer/guitarist duo of Cheryl and Steve [O'Connor] originally teamed up in 1977 in the Sahara Desert. The past 30 years has seen the duo perform in different groups around the world before moving to New Plymouth in '94 and forming a group called Two's Blues which later became Pink Champagne. 'Strike Me Pink' is the duo's first album and is composed of a mixture of original songs and covers, all influenced by the music of blues and jazz greats of the past including Bessie Smith, Frank Sinatra, T-Bone Walker, BB King and Keb Mo. Pink Champagne definitely holds a candle to their influences. This is a very real album with minimal overdubs or studio effects. I was quite impressed with the classic blues sound these two have captured -- Cheryl's vocal chords never fail her and Steve always keeps that groove on the guitar. -- Martyn Pepperell"
http://www.pinkchampagne.co.nz/index.html

1. Jimmy O'Connor - St Louis Blues (as played on UK Radio Broadband in 1987, one year before his death)
2. Pink Champagne : Pink Champagne [NZ]
3. Pink Champagne : Rainy Day in Taranaki [NZ]
4. Pink Champagne : You Can Get a Steak at Home [NZ] (one of my favorites, Cheryl created it from Paul Newman's famous response when asked why he never committed adultery all the 50 years of being married to Woodward, "Why fool around with hamburgers when you have steak at home?"
5. Pink Champagne : Come On In [NZ]
6. Nate jams with Steve [NZ]

Part Two
Stevie had many ways of showing you that he had not only talent, but he also had a feeling for playing the blues. He was good with it, his execution and his hands. He seemed to be flawless, the way he moved
with it.   —B.B. King

I remember being fascinated by the fact that he never, ever seemed to be lost in any way. I mean, it wasn't ever that he took a breather or paused to think where he was going to go next. It just flowed out of
him.   — Eric Clapton

I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist—he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In
fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar—he played music.   —SRV

One of the greatest blues musicians who ever picked up a guitar.
—John Lee Hooker

SRV - Oct 3, 1954 - Aug 27, 1990
7. Stevie Ray Vaughan : Texas Flood
8. Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-a-Whirl Band : Six Strings Down
9. SRV : Empty Arms
10. SRV : Sky is Crying
11. Otis Rush : Double Trouble
12. Albert King & SRV : Pep talk from Albert & Blues at Sunrise (all
15+ minutes!!)
