The Blues Room, Wednesdays at 9pm

The Blues (blūz) has been defined in many ways, heres a few definitions:

"A state of depression or melancholy"
"A style of music that evolved from southern African-American secular songs and is usually distinguished by a strong 4/4 rhythm, flatted thirds and sevenths, a 12-bar structure, and lyrics in a three-line stanza in which the second line repeats the first"
"The blues is an expression of anger against shame and humiliation" (B.B. King)
"African-American music, developed in the South during the mid-1800s, that became the foundation of most American popular music".

People have been defining the Blues for years but John Lee Hooker summed it up rather nicely when he said, "the blues is a story."  What you'll hear each week from The Blues Room is a variety of blues grooves, each with a story of their own.  As well, you'll get to hear new blues from around the globe, old classics and some local New Zealand blues.  There'll be something you've never heard before and perhaps something you'll know all the words to.  You'll hear the Roots of the blues and you'll hear the Fruits of the blues.

Blues Room host, Nate Taiapa, will air Interviews with local and international artists, provide up to date Blues News, announce Giveaways, and from time to time host LIVE Jams on air so please stay tuned.

What people are saying about The Blues Room and it's host, Nate Taiapa:

Phil Grey, General Manager, Community Radio Hamilton
"AWESOME!! We're totally blessed to be the home of The Blues Room - congrats to Nate for keeping the Blues happening on our airwaves"

Darcy Perry
"Without your Blues Room, the world would be a darker place. Your show has brought joy to many listeners and a voice for some who would otherwise be "overlooked" by commercial radio. You are a champion of roots music here in Aotearoa. Long live The Blues Room!"

Jason Ricci
"Without shows like The Blues Room on Community Radio Hamilton and guys like Nate Taiapa our band would really have to play blues - more than we already do! It's been through grass roots efforts like Nate's show 'The Blues Room' that keep small and large bands alike playing American music alive over seas."

Alex Dixon (The Late Great Willie Dixon's Grandson) Dixon Landing Music
"Dear Nate,
Thank you for doing such a tremendous job...My grandfather, Willie Dixon, would be proud to know that your hard work is making this possible."

Albert Castiglia (guitarist for Junior Wells) Fort Lauderdale, FL USA
"I just want to thank you for the great work you do, spreading the gospel of the blues with your awesome program, The Blues Room. You should be commended for showing people that there is a world beyond the mainstream and that this world is pretty wonderful."

Mike Garner
"The support of you and your blues show, Nate, for home-grown, NZ blues is critically important for Kiwi blues artists like me...airplay is really important, because most of my CD content is original material, so it's not just NZ musicianship - but NZ songs, too!
I value the way you ALWAYS feature a high percentage of local music in your play lists. You're a gem - wish there were more of you!"

The Blues Room voted Finalist for the Best Ethnic or Access Music Programme, New Zealand Radio Awards, 2008

The Blues Room #207 Blues with a Feeling: Songs of Little Walter, part one - 30 Dec 09.
Little Walter, born Marion Walter Jacobs (May 1, 1930 ? February 15, 1968), was an American blues harmonica player whose revolutionary technique has earned him comparisons to Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix for its innovation and impact on succeeding generations. His virtuosity and musical innovations fundamentally altered many listeners' expectations of what was possible on blues harmonica. Little Walter's body of work earned him a spot in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, making him the only artist ever to be inducted specifically for his work as a harmonica player.

His legacy has been enormous: he is widely credited by blues historians as the artist primarily responsible for establishing the standard vocabulary for modern blues and blues rock harmonica players. His influence can be heard in varying degrees in virtually every modern blues harp player who came along in his wake, from blues greats such as Junior Wells, James Cotton, George "Harmonica" Smith, Carey Bell, and Big Walter Horton, through modern-day masters Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, William Clarke, and Charlie Musselwhite, in addition to blues-rock crossover artists such as Paul Butterfield and John Popper of Blues Traveler.

The Blues Room #204 JP Blues Band and some Christmas Cheer - 9 Dec 09

The list of artists that JP Blues have performed with is just as impressive, Michael Falzarano(Hot Tuna), Chris Beard, Debbie Davies, Pete Sears(Jefferson Starship), Buddy Cage(New Riders) and so many more.
With all this experience under his belt JP Blues has put together a powerful blues trio consisting of industry veteran Drummer Pat Adkins (Gary U.S. Bonds, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, BB King) and bassist John Young. With JPBlues searing, soulful blues guitar backed by the solid rhythm section of Bassist John Young and Veteran touring/session drummer Pat Adkins the JPBlues Band combines a unique mixture of youth and experience that results in music that breaks new ground but is firmly rooted in the blues.

Episode 192 - Boo Boo Davis (Black & Tan Records) - 16 September 2009

Boo Boo Davis is a survivor and belongs to the last generation of musicians that write and play the blues based on first hand experience of a hard life in the Mississippi Delta. He was born and raised in Drew, Mississippi in the heart of Delta. It was the richest cotton land in the South and the large amounts of field workers attracted the best musicians from the surrounding areas. The entire Delta region was rich with blues, but the town of Drew was a particularly fertile one. Charley Patton stayed near Drew for many years and several legendary performers spent time there. Sharecroppers sang loudly to help pass the grueling hours of work and without a doubt Boo Boo developed his loud, bellowing voice based on the singing he heard in the fields as a young boy. In fact, that voice, through the years has demolished many amps and speaker cabinets.

In the summer of 2009 a trio, consisting of Boo Boo (vocals and harmonica), Jan Mittendorp (guitar) and John Gerritse (drums), played a string of big blues & jazz festivals all over Europe. During those long travels they got a lot of ideas for new songs. So in the middle of the tour they went into the studio for two days and recorded a new record (AIN'T GOTTA DIME). All songs were played live in the studio without any overdubs and for most songs the first take turned out to be the best one. This is exactly how they sound live. Unlike many modern blues bands, Boo Boo and his band focus on the groove, the feel, and the basic truths found in the blues. Blues doesn't come any 'realer' than this. Out now on Black & Tan Records.

Episode 180 - RIP Keith Adams - 24 June 2009

While starting this episode I checked an email from a good friend Mukluk Chuck who informed me that our good friend Keith Adams had passed away from a heart attack. Keith was a good harmonica player and one who frequently posted on the google groups harmonica message board. Keith imo brought the best and the worst out of everyone - he was great value, opinionated to the hilt and damn generous too, Keith sent me one of his custom handmade harmonica mics!  RIP Keith, this episode is in honor of you brother.

I interview Leo LaDell in this episode. I can't wait to hear them LIVE on Jan 15th 2009 in Hamilton City!  King Leo and The Growling Dogs are a four piece blues band based in Dunedin, New Zealand. They deliver a serious uptown blues sound that has won them many fans over the last few years. Leo LaDell (aka King Leo) has been playing Blues professionally for 20 years, singing, playing guitar and harmonica with a variety of great bands. His experience has seen him working with some of the greats of Blues including Pinetop Perkins, Big Bill Morganfield, and Bo Diddley. He is well-versed in the styles of his influences, including Chicago artists Muddy Waters and Little Walter, Louisiana greats Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones and Slim Harpo, and Memphis legends B.B. King, Little Milton and Bobby "Blue" Bland. After moving to Dunedin, New Zealand, Leo set about finding the musicians to produce the definitive blues sound he was looking for. The Growling Dogs came together to get the Blues rolling: Paul Southworth, Rob Falconer, and Anders Jensen.

King Leo and the Growling Dogs will [play at Biddy Mulligans, Victoria Street, Hamilton (NZ) on Thursday 15th Jan 2009 ... DON'T MISS IT!
